Wow, where to begin! Its been quite a while since I've posted...last year, to be exact. This is just a short update on how things are going around here....

Life is hard right now... My husband is the most wonderful man in the world, works hard and loves endlessly. The kids are all doing well, keeping up with schoolwork and laughing lots. Honestly, sometimes we sit stuck at the dinner table with six giggling children. As for me, well, its been a struggle. Cancer just wrecked my 'planned' life...
I'm still adjusting to the hormone changes(lack of that is) and trying to get back into the swing of a cancer-free schedule. I'm having trouble with swelling in my left leg and my feet! the bottoms of my feet !! Some days are harder than others. There are the moments when I simply want to give up, when I think I can't take it anymore. Crying is my most constant emotion these days. I'm on some kind of rollercoaster in my mind...making me weary. I'm sad and don't know why? depressed-but what about?

I have to constantly remind myself that life is precious. A good friend told me, "if you wake up in the morning and are breathing, today has a purpose". I'll admit the fear of cancer returning to my body - is terrifying. Its easy to let anxiousness build up inside, let it consume my thoughts and somewhat control on how I live out everyday life. However... Life can't be put on hold because of fear and worry. "Which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life's span?" Jesus asked this in Luke 12:25. Its plainly stated, so why do I do it? God is always and forever in control of all and He promises never to give us anything we cannot handle. Sometimes I just want to see the BIG picture... but then that exposes my lack of trust.

I will go back for my 3 month check-up later this month... that floods me with a multitude of emotion...Praying for good words as life moves on...

i can say without a doubt in my mind, that i am thankful. thankful for my family who surrounds me with love, for a Heavenly Father who loves me unconditionally. there's a certianty of knowing life itself is a blessing. this road has been long and hard, nobody could have prepared me for what i went through. no amount of words can describe the external and internal pain of having cancer, some things just can't be explained with such ease. now that my journey is at its end, another begins. the path of recovering from this seems to me a strange one to take. from the moment i was told the cancer had completely left my body, i knew a miracle had been preformed. there is no other explanation, God healed me and took my sickness away. and like a solider returning from a war-trodden country, i am settling back into the world of health i once knew. fighting the cancer was truly a physical, emotional, and spiritual battle. and as i heal from the hard times, i know that He will hold my hand, like He has always done and forever will do.

Today at my 5th (out six--YES one more!) chemo treatment ~~~ my BRAC 1 and 2 tests came back NEGATIVE!!

NOW stand up and Praise the Lord with us!

this simply means that my genetic test results showed NEGATIVE for the mutation or alteration detected in the gene for ovarian and breast cancer.............

me... nor my daughters... nor my Mom... nor my sisters...

Yes-- I had Clear Cell Ovarian Cancer stage II......... but my doctor explained it as a 'random' type...

WE are PRAISING GOD for this answer to prayer!

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance is encouraging you and me to wear teal this month, but especially this first Friday in September which has been declared National Teal Day.

Teal has become the ovarian cancer community’s color as pink is for breast cancer. The community wants to use the color to serve as a reminder that ovarian cancer is the 5th leading cause of cancer death among women.

A simple way to wear teal is to join the campaign “Teal Toes.” Simply paint your toe nails using a teal colored nail polish. Wear sandals, flip flops, or open toed shoes to show off your “teal toes.” When someone comments on your bright toes, use the opportunity to teach them about ovarian cancer. Read more here.

On April 22, 2011 we found out that I had Ovarian Cancer (just a couple months from bringing home our sweet Samson Jude from Ethiopia)... this day has changed our lives... we believe our Father God holds each of us in His hands and we will be held through this difficult journey. As of right now, I am waiting for my 5th chemo treament.

September is National Ovarian Cancer awarness month. The Ovarian Cancer Awareness Alliance and me are encouraging you to wear teal this month, but especially this first Friday in September which has been declared National Teal Day.

Today was my scheduled #4 treatment........... postponed until next week(again!)........ as my 'counts' are not where they should be. This is hard for me as I love schedules, lists, and checking things off........ so more bloodwork next week to confirm my body can take the 'treatment'. I KNOW without a doubt that God is in control and even rescheduling my life!

and the sandy get away that was planned over 3 years ago, when I had NO idea this would be my journey in life.

Madison & Adeline here, updating you on our Mom. As of today, she is halfway through her chemo treatment! Her counts and numbers are where they should be, which is awesome news. Thank you for praying and for your encouraging words to her as she fights this out...I know God is blessing her through you!!

(Her meds today were a bit different - making her feel on cloud 9...however, her chemo friends say she will come down and hit reality. So after that time, she'll tell you about the pickle jar in her hands. Its fun and God is good - and how He uses the little things in life to bring a smile to our faces.)

I'll admit-- that last week this was exactly where I was ... in the bottomless pit. I begged God to take me home to heaven. BUT ... with your many prayers - my family - my doctors- and GOD -- I am out of the pit and praising HIM today. I can see blessing after blessing that has happened; even the chemo treatment being postponed.

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. GOD is GOOD

...after getting 'prepared mentally' for my 3rd treatment on Wednesday... my chemo nurse called and said that my 'blood counts' are much too low...and to plan for more bloodwork on the 18th to see if they will come back higher!
so
please pray with me specifically......

about 3 years ago the plans started for a celebration/reunion of my family (3 brothers/2sisters) with my parents' 50th anniversary at a private beach house in North Carolina............ my sweet sis-in-law said the only way anyone could get out of it would be death!! (teasing of course).......... so this year when I found out I had cancer I teased back saying I wouldn't be there! Well my doctors have told me that I CAN go ... my parents are going to come help us drive to NC with room to separate our 6 kids (as you know how a LONG road trip can be)..... I'm praying that my counts will be up so the treatment can be the 19th so I will have several days to recover before we leave........ again please pray with me specifically....

so again... 'man may make his plans, but only the Lord will bring them about'...

Sunday to Praise Him!

Today is one of the first days that I felt like getting up and going anywhere. So off to church we went (it's been months and have so missed it)... It was good to see familiar faces but hard to say (no hugs please) as my 'counts' (white blood count and platelets) are quite low. The sermon was just what our family needed to hear ....

As I lay in my hammock on the front porch many times I call out to God but not exactly sure what to say as the pain is intense and I have so many questions ...

Romans 8:31-34 was the call to worship.... timely for me.

also Romans 8:26 "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will."

I want to thank the many of you for praying for me and my family. This has been hard and it's not over. I go for my 3rd treatment on Wednesday. The treatment is nothing compared to the week following.

I want to share also what happened today when we stopped at Cracker Barrel for lunch (someone gave us a gift card-thank you!) .....

I usually ALWAYS have my 'gollum like head' covered if I go out in public... but I got hot and frustrated and pulled off my scarf ...but left the sunglasses on... OH HOW THEY STARE! anyways ...

We got our lunch and being my appetite is about as big a walnut, and the air conditioner was freezing me, I told Montie I'd wait for him and the kids outside in the rocker that was right in the sunshine.... OH it felt so good... I had my scarf kinda draped over my head when we went in and while sitting in the sun, but you could see the bald back......

Well here came this nicely dressed older lady and she sat down right next to me... "Do you have cancer?" 'yes' "My names is Susan (honestly I don't remember her name) and I had cancer too. I am a Christian." 'yes-i am too' "When I had cancer I wanted to give up and didn't want to go on, but the Lord promised to raise me up and that's exactly what He did and I'm living years past that." 'well this last week i prayed that He would raise me to heaven and just take me it was such a hard week-and He didn't' "May I pray for you?".........so she prayed for me, for my family, for the Lord to raise me up be it to heaven or on here on earth- whatever His will. Then she squeezed my hand and said , "I'll probably never see you again, until the day we're together in heaven!" and she walked back in to her lunch table.

So as I'm often told...

you'll be able to help someone some day.

life continues... had 2nd chemo treatment... still as mean with the pain as the first... Montie got a hammock for Fathers Day and we put it on the front porch as 'my second bed'...........sometimes one of the littles will decide for a snuggle.
I have so many questions... so many thoughts... maybe one day write it all down... but right now get through moment by moment.

it's said that 'everyone's chemo treatment is different'...

mmmmmmmmmm so I don't know really how to compare it?

so here is my raw truth right now...

My sweet Mama was able to come in from Wyoming to sit with me -read to me--

and journal each day...

this was her first entry:

"15 hrs after chemo hits---excruciating pain

skin hurts - chills- joints ache- teeth/jaw hurt ..."

writing on and on each day until she had to go home (2 days ago and HOW I MISS HER!!)

- almost like the chemo poison was moving around to each and every part be it a good part or a bad part to attack!

Today-- being several days from treatment, I'm exhausted and the incisions from the hysterectomy (4-22) feel raw and freshly cut on the inside? somewhat healed on the outside?

My hair is still on? wondering when it'll come falling out?

My strength is Jesus' name... I couldn't do it without calling out to him and finding the peace only He can give.

I've never cried so much in all my life... unfortunately haven't had a day without it... being sent into menopause in about 5 minutes, the hot flashes are really quite bizarre and make me feel on fire! the emotions fluxuate wildly.

I'm praying for a bubble of grace to protect my kids-- each one of them-- as they see me suffer and melt down so much. Each respond differently to me. My constant rock - my hubs- is the best and calm me down-I pray for his strength to keep up-oh how I love him.

I wonder why the summer 2011 has this journey laid out? Will we ever feel 'normal' again?

I wonder why ALL of this right after bringing our Samson Jude home?

He lost his birth mother... makes me wonder if he'll lose me too?

the 'port' is in ... making the access easier for each chemo treatment... I'm scheduled 6 -- one every 3 weeks-- First one tomorrow in Nashville... I'm a bit scared --I guess the unknown? Thank you for your prayers

Gabe is still in the hospital (here in Columbia) and they won't let me visit him because of the 'germ' issue... makes me sad... but we do chat on the phone... He has to stay one more day as a precaution as he had so much inflamation around the 'now removed' appendix.... He sounds good...wish I could see him...

This journey is really 'growing' our family in so many ways. We are learning to trust and lean on Jesus even more... we also have to watch our tone and words as we all seem on 'edge'--just to be honest with ya!

I did sew if you can believe it? it helped to detour my mind a bit... not sure when I'll get them posted just 2 dresses so far... will probably do them as an auction... maybe I'll hit a 'new normal' during these chemo weeks? Funny how ya think you're done fund-raising ?!... as the Lord provided such wonderful POPPY DIP supporters that helped us to bring home our little Samson Jude!!... and then I thought I'd continue to sew for the 'post adoption' costs and with intentions of being able to help others on their journey of adoption.... never dreaming cancer-unexpected costs would come into life...

Please pray for my first treatment on Thursday... and thank you so much as the journey of life continues with it's new twists and turns...

in the hospital having his apendix taken out... while I'm at home not allowed to visit my boy as I'm scheduled to have the port put in tomorrow..and then on Thursday start chemo.........

Our little Samson Jude is such a blessing in our family and his smile can make sunshine appear when the storm seems so dark. He is very gentle with me and will even join in with tears at times or just reach out and hold my hand.

Thank you Lord for giving us tender-funny-compassionate-little SJ and for bringing him into our family at just the right time.

My Hubs and all of the kids are doing great in supporting such a blubbering 'mama'...

The roller coaster of life's emotions right now is unbelievable (for me mostly)... I'm VERY thankful for all of you who are praying-- and have sent cards...

I keep them in a bag and read- and re-read them often...

I even sat down to sew a tiny bit... so maybe a 'scrappy' auction will come soon :)

since the surgery my eyesite has really changed! so I have a couple pair of those cute reading glasses now!!

update on the medical of my life...

I am having a port put in on Wednesday... and then my first chemo treatment on Thursday...

I am scared,

.... if you remember May 1, 2009 'Poppy Dip' emerged.. on my 39th birthday...poppy dip meaning 'all is good' words from our little Solomon

Oh how life has changed

May 1, 2011 (my 41st birthday) I was in a hospital bed hearing news that turned life up-side-down.

"I was wrong... the tumor was cancerous... it had 'popped'/was leaking... therefore we must take every precaucion to get any cancer cell lingering in her body,"Doctor said / told Montie midway through surgery.

We brought home our little Samson Jude at the end of Februrary-a long adoption journey from Ethiopia...we set into the adjusting having our new little guy in home...I didn't really think too much of the 'belly issues' I seemed to be having (dealt with IBS issues my whole life).... but for some odd reason the pain seemed to be getting worse?... So long story short... I had surgery to remove all girlie parts and the tumor that the doctor had assured me was 99.9% NOT cancer. I was sent home to deal with life and knowing I would start chemo therapy as soon as I healed from the surgery... dealing without a hormome in my body... Most women have time to slip into menopause /or are given hormone therapy after a hysterectomy.... but due to my cancer (Clear Cell Cancer) I cannot be given any type of hormone until after chemo... so I'm crying of the time... never was much of a 'cryer' so this is bizzare...

I had a set-back less than a week from surgery, as the pain was unbearable... so back to the hospital to get things under control.will spare you the details.. I was there 5 more days......

Now, most days I'm crying and in my bed.. I do get up some...Many have sent cards - food- encouraging words... and I thank you all.

My Doctor is suppose to let me know when the chemo will start (soon I think)... I'm trying to understand the medical part of all of this and the reality of this being my life and the dynamics it is having in/on our home.... It's very hard ...
I covet your prayers...

I've had a couple moments of feeling so good to think I might even sew a little poppy dip - as that is such therapy for me.... but it hasn't happened yet.

I do believe with all my heart that the Lord is holding my life in His hands... I don't understand a lot and wish I knew some 'why's....

so I'll try to update as I can ... and maybe offer a poppy dip auction surprise every now and then... but no promises.

I just got off the phone with Mom... she's back in the hospital. Had complications & the doctors are doing their best to find the cause of the unexplained pain. She'll come home as soon as she can.

This is Madison, Sallee's daughter, updating on today....
Mom had the surgery done at midday, it went well. The tumors were removed successfully by 'robotics'. But they are starting Mom on chemo therapy soon to rid any possibility of remaining cancer. I write this with a heavy heart, I'm scared for her, I hurt for her. But she is strong willed and I know she'll fight this out.
Thank you for praying, and if you will continue to pray for her through this-- that she will be strengthened & comforted by God's love in the journey ahead. And that we will always have on our hearts, the reminder that God is in control of everything-everywhere-at all times.

... had my appt. yesterday and we are thankful ...

...chance of cancer is 5-10% (much lower than what we were told last week)!! Praise God!!

...my surgery will be April 22nd...

...praying that the doctor will be able to remove the tumor/parts by 'robotics--laparoscopic' as it is less invasive.. hopsital stay is less.. recovery time is less.... But the doctor will not determine this until he can 'see'

...praying for each family member as I cope with pain and recovery and not being able to pick up and carry my little ones!!

An update before Monday's Auction...

we did NOT pass our embassy clearance

(this is to grant the visa to bring Samson Montie Couch- as courts deemed our son ~ yes we will rename him Samson Jude Couch!! the visa to bring him home)

the US embassy is requiring another document that the Ethiopian courts say 'NO' we will not give it...
this document is part of Samson's story and maybe we'll share some in time... but right now
we WAIT and PRAY and WAIT and PRAY...
knowing in our heads that GOD is the author of all and knows what is best...
but trying to tell our hearts it will all be okay???

Our friends that have become dear to our hearts ~ as they were with us in Ethiopia for the same court day ~ December 27 ~ have been given clearance to bring their precious children home. Each family will go this week and have promised to love on our Samson Jude!!

here's their journey long story short...

... in process to foster/adopt... lead to heartbreak... time..time..time.. and so had to update homestudy... and decided to also pursue an Ethiopian adoption...

...GOD had other plans!!

...within a matter of 2 weeks ...this family of FOUR grew to SEVEN!!

please meet Ayla (3), Zoe (9 mo), Elizabeth (5), Max (2), and Jackson (6)...

Growing SO fast and completely stepping out in faith ~ not much time to 'fund~raise'!! (as we met through POPPY DIP!!)

So thinking of Valentine's Day and LOVE... would you please step out and help this family as they live His calling ~ paying the huge loan that was needed to bring these little ones home!!

Our friends ~ the Krehbiels ~ just got home from Ethiopia ~

they went to court ~ and passed!! ~ Praise the Lord!!

We sent a musical/voice recoreded "I love you Samson"/photo card with them.. They got to deliver it to him and give him some first hand loving!!

Remember how I've said before...
My hubs ~ Montie ~ is the most creative ~ artistic ~ best
carpenter in the world...
He has made each of our kids' beds...
the littles have 'teddy-bear' beds as we call them
using their crib mattresses
cute and little!

my sweet sis-in-law made this blanket way back when Esther came home !!

will be turned to be side by side with Samson Jude's bed - in time
